It’s a new astrological year for all of us when the Sun crosses the equator and enters the sign of Aries – Happy Birthday Aries! This weekend’s equinox marks the balance point of equal parts day and night. From approximately March 20 to April 19, the sun makes its annual trip through Aries, a dynamic, impulsive and risk-taking fire sign. Aries energy will bring a more spontaneous and competitive feeling, urging us to move forward and fast, blazing trails and taking on the world. As the first sign of the zodiac, Aries is thought of as the “baby,” often exhibiting a childlike vibe that can lend itself to “leaping before looking”. Rams are known to be quick on their feet and fast to take the initiative, always striving to take action and crush their goals.
In the northern hemisphere, the Earth starts to tilt more towards the Sun and Spring begins, signifying a renewal of life and hope, longer days, and the return of the Green Man. The Green Man is a pre-Christian god of vegetation, symbolizing the life that is found in the natural plant world and in the Earth. His image is typically portrayed as a human face surrounded by a dense foliage of leaves, vines and flowers, representing the idea that Man was born from nature and is directly tied to the fate of nature.
As Christianity spread, the Green Man went into hiding, with stonemasons leaving secret images of his face around cathedrals and churches.
Many scholars suggest that the tales of Robin Hood evolved from Green Man mythology. Allusions to the Green Man can even be found in J.M. Barrie’s classic “Peter Pan” – an eternally youthful boy, dressed in green and living in the forest with the wild animals. J.R.R. Tolkien referenced the myth twice – Tom Bombadil and Treebeard are both Green Man figures. The Irish legend of the Leprechaun also faintly echoes The Green Man. The ancient Egyptian god Osiris was commonly depicted with a green face representing vegetation, rebirth and resurrection. A revered figure in Islam, al-Khidr, or “The Green One” in Arabic, was described in the Qur’an as a righteous servant of God possessing great wisdom.
