Happy Aquarius Season ~ Astound Yourself!

Happy Birthday Aquarians! The sun begins its month long journey through Aquarius this week, bringing a flowing energy that supports personal aspirations with the help of friends, groups, or organizations. Aquarius is symbolized by two rolling waves  ♒ , and literally means “water-bearer”. Because it is an air sign in the mental area of the zodiac, the water is more of a metaphor for the “spirit of life” or the flow of “chi” or “life force”. The carrier is the one who uses conscious awareness to move and disperse the life force with intention. Aquarius is a humanitarian sign, as all of our life forces are interconnected.

Aquarian ~ Thomas A. Edison

Thomas Edison was born on February 11, 1847, and he’s a perfect example of the Aquarian spirit. As a child, his hyperactive mind made him unfit for public school and his mother decided to teach him at home. He was an avid reader of a wide range of subjects by age 11, and learning independently worked best for him.  Edison constantly experimented, amassing over 1,000 patents over his 84 year life.

One of the keys to his success, besides continuous hard work, was his ability to coordinate with other brilliant minds. He established the first industrial research laboratory, where he merged organized science with teamwork into the process of invention. He became known as the “Wizard of Menlo Park”, named after the New Jersey town where he set up the lab and did some of his best-known work.

Many of Edison’s inventions came from perfecting the work of others. For example, the light bulb had been previously invented, but after numerous trials Edison created the first commercially viable incandescent light bulb. He also founded the first investor-owned electric utility company that would later become General Electric, which is still one of the largest publicly traded companies in the world.

Despite having hearing difficulties in both ears as a child and being nearly deaf as an adult, he invented the phonograph and one of the earliest motion picture cameras. To be able to listen to a music player or piano, he would chomp into the wood of the instrument with his teeth to absorb the sound waves as vibrations.

Besides being a talented inventor, Edison was also a successful manufacturer and businessman who was skilled at marketing to the public. He made business partnerships with investors like J.P. Morgan and the Vanderbilt family. When his past employee and long time friend, Henry Ford, was designing an internal combustion engine automobile, he offered encouragement and invented a battery for the self-starter. The system for the Model T Ford was then used extensively in the auto industry for decades.

Edison, like many Aquarians, has been characterized as a “freethinker”, a person who forms their own ideas and opinions rather than accepting those of other people, especially in religious teaching. Many freethinkers tend to be humanists, who base morality on human needs and find meaning in human compassion, social progress, art, love, personal happiness, and the furtherance of knowledge.

When asked about his religious beliefs, Edison stated “what you call God, I call Nature”. He was then accused of being an atheist, and he clarified, “I do not believe in the God of the theologians; but that there is a Supreme Intelligence I do not doubt.”

Nonviolence was a key principal to Edison’s moral views. When asked to serve as a naval consultant during World War I, he specified that he would only work on defensive weapons and he later noted, “I am proud of the fact that I never invented weapons to kill.” Explaining his philosophy, he stated “nonviolence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages.”

Akin to Thomas Edison, Aquarians tend to be forward thinkers that bring progressive change to humanity and future generations. Other famous Aquarians include Galileo Galilei, Charles Darwin, Abraham Lincoln, and Oprah Winfrey. While people who are born under this sign have an inherent gift, all of us can utilize the Sun’s energy as it travels through Aquarius. To best optimize the energy, take some time to define your hopes, wishes, personal goals and then seek out partnerships that can help you make them real. And if you just can’t seem to find the means to your dreams, invent it!
