Libra and the Balance of Light

We’re celebrating one of our favorite times of year, the Autumn Equinox! This special time of equal day and night occurs only two times a year: once in the spring as daylight grows towards summer, and once in the fall when the daylight recedes towards winter. The Autumn Equinox marks the peak of the fall harvest, and ushers in the peaceful and balanced season of Libra. As the sun crosses the equator on it’s apparent journey southward, the Earth’s tilt causes the sunlight to take on a beautiful golden hue. Tree leaves begin to lose their chlorophyll and their green color gives way to yellow, orange and red, delighting artists, nature lovers and those young at heart. Lakes and ponds that have been warmed by summer create mystical steam fog in the cool morning air. Hard squash crops like pumpkins are cheerfully plump and turning to a happy orange.

The mythology of the astrological signs originate from and parallels the Earth’s seasonal changes. The symbol for Libra is the scales, which comes from the balance of light and dark due to equal day and night lengths and also from this being the peak of the fall harvest season, a time when farmers traditionally brought their goods to market to be weighed and sold. It’s also the time for gardeners to gather the seeds of plants they want to preserve over winter, and renew their life cycle again in the spring. The 7th house of Libra is known as the house of partnerships and relationships, where individuals must find a balance between their own needs and wants while taking into consideration those of others. Libras are known for their their kindness and cooperative nature, and for their fairness and strong sense of justice.

The closest full moon to the Fall Equinox, which occurs this year on Sept. 24-25 in the Americas, is known as the “Harvest Moon”. This originates from the farmers who were working long days to harvest the great bounty at this time while the daylight was continually diminishing. As the sun would set, the moon would rise in the east and illuminate the fields into the night giving the farmers extra gathering time. The moon appears more full for several evenings in a row at this time because of the narrow angle between the ecliptic (the moon and planet’s orbital path) and the evening horizon near the autumn equinox. Instead of the moon rising the average of about 50 minutes later each day in mid-latitudes, it rises about 30-35 minutes later for several days before and after the full Harvest moon, with even less time at high northern latitudes. This difference means that the moon rises relatively soon after sunset for a few nights in a row, giving the appearance of several full moons around the time of the Harvest Moon. The Harvest Moon also takes on an orange color, because the Earth’s atmosphere is thicker on the horizon and shifts the light towards the red spectrum.

The moderate temperatures and beautiful scenery makes this one of our favorite times of year to travel. We’ve been visiting family in the northeast, which gave us the opportunity to combine two of our favorite pastimes: enjoying nature’s scenery and rockhounding! We spent some time in Herkimer County, New York exploring the Adirondack Mountains and hunting for Herkimer Diamonds. We found a wide range of these naturally faceted double terminated crystals, from raw matrix specimens to large golden healer crystals, and lots of small sparkling clear jewelry points. You can visit our Etsy shop to see some of these beauties, and check back often as we’ll be adding more during the coming months!

Herkimer Diamonds are considered one of the power stones for Libras, because of their balancing properties. The naturally forming double pointed crystals allow for energy to channel in both directions, making them excellent for crystal healing. Libras tend to be good givers and receivers of energy, a necessary component of any healthy relationship. Herkimer diamonds can also balance the left and right hemispheres of the brain, the logical with the creative, which enhances Libra’s naturally sharp mind and artistic sensibility. These stones can bring clarity of mind and peacefulness, which can counter the Libra tendency for indecisiveness and an overstimulated mind. Quartz Crystal is also a protective stone, which can help shield the empathetic Libra.

Gemstones that help Libra live out their best attributes (and avoid common pitfalls) are also good for the rest of the zodiac signs to bring out these traits in themselves. The 12 signs of the astrological wheel represent different aspects of the life cycle that must be incorporated in order to have a holistic life. It is beneficial for us all to become good peacemakers, communicators, cooperative partners, and to have a balanced mind that can be both creative and rational at the same time. Here’s a few other stones that you can find in our Etsy shop that are helpful for Libras and those looking to work on those attributes:

It brings hope and support during change, and releases the past with ease. Fire Opal also awakens personal power, and encourages positive and healthy sexuality and relationships.

Aquamarine is another power stone for Libra. This gemstone inspires truth, trust, and compassion. It can help to articulate feelings and wisdom with clarity and conviction, and promote responsibility for ones’ actions. Aquamarine increases commitment and fidelity in relationships. It’s also a crystal of natural justice, utilizing compromise and negotiation in confrontational situations.

Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet of romance and beauty. Our handmade wire wrapped earrings with lapis lazuli, shaded Carnelian, and gold are perfect for fall, and sure to spice up your love life! Carnelian is traditionally worn to enhance passion, love, and desire. It’s also a stabilizing stone that helps you focus on the present, and let go of past pain and emotional blockages. Lapis lazuli (a Libra power stone), is known as a stone of truth that promotes honesty with yourself and honest communication with people close to you. It enhances love and faithfulness in partnerships and marriage. Lapis helps you express your authentic inner self, while also fostering harmony in relationships.

The Autumn Equinox is the perfect time to bring equilibrium in your personal life and all of your relations. It’s a time when you can balance feminine and masculine energies, as well as spiritual and physical energies. As the light of days grows shorter, the scales tip toward darkness, and a cycle of inner growth begins. The weather grows cooler and the trees shed their leaves, encouraging us to let go of anything that no longer benefits us.

Astro-talk

The Sun enters Libra on Sept 22-23, beginning a month long cycle focused on our relationships, friendships, and other partnerships. As the Moon builds toward full in Aries on the 24th, people will feel the need to express their personal emotions, while also wanting to participate in a collective. Be clear with your desires and intentions, and be open to responding in kind to others doing the same. It’s one of those opportunities where the whole can really be larger than the sum of the parts if all’s handled well. The Libra Sun will make a 90 degree square to Saturn on the 25th, which can raise conflicts between issues of self-gratification versus duties and responsibilities. You may also run up against a barrier that seems like it’s holding you back, but if you look deeply, you may find that it’s self-created barrier and easier to remove than you first thought.

The Libra Sun makes a harmonic 120 degree trine with Mars in Aquarius on the 27th, which is good for asserting yourself in communications. This transit can boost confidence and enthusiasm, and may provide an impulsive opportunity. It’s a physically active combination that’s not only good for the body, but the mind and spirit. The energy also enhances creative pursuits and other self-expressive activities.

October begins with Pluto turning direct at 18 degrees of Capricorn. Deep internal changes that have been occurring over the last 5 months will now begin to surface into the external world. If there’s a part of your life that you’ve been trying to transform, you may start to see some real changes happening. Mercury in Libra will make a 90 degree square to Pluto on October 2, which may present a power struggle related to these transformations. This is not a good time to push your views or coerce anyone of your position, as you’re likely to get an argument. It is a good time for introspection of the psychological energies that are inside of you, and how they affect your interactions with the world.

Libra’s ruling planet, Venus, will turn retrograde on October 5 in Scorpio, and will travel backwards into Libra until November 15. During this 40 days and 40 nights transit, Venus goes from being the evening star, to disappearing against the sun, and then reemerging as the morning star. This synodic cycle of Venus happens 5 times every 8 years and traces a five pointed star across the zodiac. The pentagram of Venus is a beautiful example of sacred geometry and the harmony of the spheres, and we’ll dedicate an entire blog post to this in the future, stay tuned! During the Venus retrograde, you may need to reevaluate and renegotiate some of your relationships. Old relations from the past may resurface and need to be settled. Venus rules material goods too, so it’s a good time to do some fall cleaning and get rid of things you no longer need. It’s generally not a good time to make luxury purchases, except for bargains that other people are trying to clear out. It can be a good time for creativity and exploring your inner world. Art for art sake, and for personal healing, as opposed to art for the public.

The moon becomes new on 10/8 in the middle of Libra. This is the time to evaluate the recent shifts in your partnerships and relationships, and set your course for the next two weeks. If there’s any area of your life that needs brought into balance, or if there’s any peacemaking that needs to occur, the 3 days surrounding the new moon offers the best opportunity. The Venus retrograde will make a 90 degree square to Mars on 10/10, and any out of balance masculine and feminine energies in your life will need tended to. This can manifest as conflicting energies inside of you, or in the outside world between males and females. The next couple of days are followed by the square of the Sun in Libra to Pluto in Capricorn. Watch out for power struggles and control issues related to deep seated psychological patterns. This transit can bring challenging circumstances, but also ones that can lead to real breakthroughs. Often this transit coincides with the opportunity to purge an outdated behavior pattern that was preventing a creative change from happening in your life. Let it go and watch something good take its place!

Things get a little lighter after this and we have a string of Mercury transits that may shed some light on recent changes. On 10/15, Mercury in Scorpio conjuncts the Venus retrograde and there’s likely to be some important news or communication related to your spouse, partner, or other family member. There’s also a good chance the discussion will be centered around love, money, or both. You may have a new insight about how these fit into your life. Mercury makes a harmonic 120 degree trine to Neptune in Pisces on 10/19, providing a possible emotional healing moment related to these topics. It’s also a great aspect for creativity, spiritual exploration, and you may even receive some psychic inspiration. On 10/22, Mercury makes a 60 degree sextile to Pluto in Capricorn and you will get a chance to put your new insights into form. It’s a time to communicate any newly discovered truths with others and see how it transforms your world.

We hope you are enjoying this beautiful time of year, and have a wonderful Equinox! Don’t forget to break out the Autumn decorations ~ gourds, pine cones, acorns, nuts, wheat, dried leaves, corn, horns of plenty, pomegranate, seed pods, and anything that captures this season for you! Peace, Love, and Happy Journeys!
